The local area has the largest and some of the best roman sites in Iberia. The ancient city of Conimbriga is the largest Roman settlement in Portugal and is well worth visiting. It is classified as a National Monument. (Located approximately 3 miles from San Sabastiao)
Like many archaeological sites, Conimbriga was built in layers. Some of the earliest layers date back to the first Iron Age in the 9th Century B.C. The Romans arrived in the 2nd Century A.D., conquering the Celtic inhabitants and establishing a city that grew, flourished, and then fell victim to barbarian invasions until Conimbriga's residents fled to nearby Coimbra in 468.

Conimbriga is the best preserved roman city in Portugal. The city walls are largely intact, and the mosaic floors and foundations of many houses and public buildings remain. In the baths, you can view the network of stone heating ducts beneath the now-missing floors. Archaeologists estimate that only 10 percent of the city has been excavated, so you're likely to see new discoveries if you return to Conimbriga after a previous visit.

The site also has a museum that displays objects found by archaeologists during their excavations.

Penela, is the nearest market town to the house (one and a half miles). There are restaurants, banks, doctors, dentists a new hospital, supermarkets, cinema, tennis courts, sports, recreation hall and a modern library. Penela is famous for the number and variety of Festivals held each year.

NB: Full planning permission has been granted for this refurbishment project.

San Sabastiao is equidistant between Lisbon and Porto airports so full advantage can be taken of the low cost airlines. Drive time is approximately an hour and a half.

Photograph 2, shows the calcada (local cobbles) drive, parking area and large rear garden which has many fruit and walnut trees. To the left are the garage windows. Above the barbeque area.

Photograph 3, shows part of the rear garden which is level and fertile. The larger trees are walnuts at the base of which is a very old stone threshing circle which has been retained to provide a rustic outside dinning area. The rear door enters a hallway with bathroom off to the left and large kitchen to the right. The steps treads and terrace which is large enough for a coffee table and chairs are in beige marble.

Photograph 4, shows the living room ceiling which is fully insulated and constructed in Scandinavian pine. The roof can be coloured to any shade you desire and the actual colour is somewhat lighter that the photograph suggests.
