Within a short walk there are cafés, bars, and restaurants. The towns medieval castle at its centre, provides stunning 360 degree views of the surrounding area. All weather football, basket ball and tennis is also available.

Penela is host to a number of colorful folk festivals. The largest of which takes place in September The festival of Sao Miguel where Honey, Walnuts and strings of Onions are for sale. There is also folk singing, dancing rustic restaurants serving local specialties and many other typically Portuguese activities.

The town first given it’s charter in 1137 has all of the modern amenities that you could wish for. Banks, post office, restaurants, cafés and shops. There is also a lively market each Wednesday where you can buy fresh fish, meat and vegetables. The many stalls sell everything from leather boots and belts to pots, pans and farming implements. The grilled chicken vendors offer a simple, tasty lunch with wine at very low cost.
